LEARNING OUTCOME 1

LEARNING OUTCOME 1

Looking back at myself from the beginning of the semester in terms of being a writer, is quite mind boggling. Specifically looking back at my first few journals, and my first writing project the changes not only in my writing style are evident, but its also clear that my revision process has been greatly altered too. The first thing I want to compare in terms of my revision process between now and the beginning of the Semester, is revising the thesis. To be honest for my first writing project, I treated the thesis like an afterthought. Not only did I do that, I also used the Standard “High school approach” which greatly hindered my ability to write a complex, interesting essay. But again, in a sense I’m grateful that I took this approach because it allowed me to see my shortcoming, learn from it, and use it to grow and improve as a writer. Not only did it change the way I approach the thesis in future projects for this class, It helped lead me the to the understanding of how crucial the thesis is in terms of the quality, and cohesiveness of the essay. For my second project, I probably changed and revised the thesis 7 or 8 times. And this helped the final product of the thesis so much. I felt it was clear, coherent and proved my point in a complex, concise manner. To me its proved that I can learn from my mistakes in a manner, that will help me grow as a writer, which in turn makes me a more well rounded student and person. For my essay in project 2 the difference between my first and final draft, is again clear. My first draft looks messy. But, my goal here wasn’t trying to gain points for presentation. I was trying to get my general thoughts and ideas down in a manner that would provide the groundwork necessary to allow me to create an essay that I could be proud of. And I feel like I accomplished that. Comparing my first draft to my final draft, you can see just how much time was spent between the two. Each draft builds off each other in a way that brings my thoughts, opinions, and writing closer to the finished product which is something I really appreciate about writing and this class. It’s so cool to look back and see the journey, how the thoughts have evolved from in your mind to your final, perfected product, the final draft of the essay. Another thing to note in the revision process that changed from my first to my second project was meeting with our writing fellow, Anjana. She was super helpful in providing a different, and unique perspective on my writing. The feedback she gave was instrumental to the finished product of my essay, and I owe a lot of that to her. It was such a rewarding experience and it really changed how I approached to thinking about some of my writing.
